However, this will not resolve your problem of setting up referential integrity between the Customer and Pets tables. There is actually a pet record that has no owner record associated with it in the Mountain Animal Start database. So you need to remove all orphaned Pets records (Pets records that have no Customer) before setting up Referential integrity between the two tables. To accomplish this, follow these steps: 1. Select the Query button and press the New button of the Query container of the Database window. 2. Select Find Unmatched Query Wizard from the choices. 3. Select the PETS table from the first screen of the Wizard and press the Next button. 4. Select the CUSTOMER table from the choices and press the Next button. 5. Make sure the Customer Number field is highlighted in both tables and press the Next button. 6. Select the fields you wish to see in the query Pet ID, Customer Number, Pet Name, and Type of Animal. Then press the Next button for the final screen. 7. In the final screen you can specify a new name for the query simply accept the default name Pets Without Matching Customer and press the Finish button. As Figure 24-22 shows, Access displays a single record a dog named Brownie with a Customer Number of IZ001. This is the bad record that is disallowing setting up of referential integrity between the Customer and Pets table. You can now remove this record and go back and create referential integrity between the two tables in the Relationship builder.

Defects are of fundamental importance because they affect the value of work done (and therefore the obligation to pay, or the right to receive payment); they may prevent work being regarded as complete; they may entitle purchasers (and sometimes third parties) to compensation; and they may even entitle purchasers to terminate the building contract or the appointment of professional consultants. The importance of the distinction between patent and latent defects often depends on the contractual terms. For example, it may not be permissible to certify completion if there are patent defects, or it may be that liability for loss is excluded in respect of latent, but not patent, defects. Further, whether defects are patent may be relevant to the duty to mitigate loss, and may engage the defence of contributory negligence. Finally, whether a defect is patent or latent may sometimes be relevant to the commencement of the relevant limitation period.
